Workington sits on the west Cumbrian coast in Cumberland, England, at the mouth of the River Derwent where the estuary meets the Solway Firth. Its location on the edge of the Lake District gives a mix of coastal scenery and industrial waterfront, with remnants of the old iron and steel works around Moss Bay and Roman archaeology at nearby Papcastle.
Historically driven by coal, iron and shipbuilding, the local economy is now more mixed with light industry, retail and regeneration projects, while a strong community identity is kept alive by sport - notably rugby league’s Workington Town - and local events. The town has also been marked by notable flood events in recent years and by historic sites such as Workington Hall, which together give it a character of resilience and layered history.
