Ripley is an electoral ward and market town in Amber Valley, Derbyshire, in the East Midlands of England, lying a few miles north of Derby and on the south-eastern fringe of the Peak District. The ward centres on a compact town with a traditional market square and riverside setting beside the River Amber, with good road and rail links that make it both a local service centre and a commuter base for the wider Derbyshire area.
Historically the area grew through coal, ironworking and engineering - the nearby Butterley works being one of the better known industrial names - and vestiges of that 19th-century industrial landscape mix with Victorian civic architecture. Today the ward combines local shopping, community clubs and occasional festivals with easy access to countryside walks, canal and rail heritage attractions, so it retains a strong local identity built around its market-town roots and industrial past.
