South Derbyshire

Local authority district in Derbyshire, England

Coordinates:52.82, -1.54
OS grid ref:SK 31 25

South Derbyshire is a local authority district in Derbyshire, England, centred on the former coal and clay town of Swadlincote. The district mixes small market towns and villages with broad tracts of agricultural land, bounded to the east by the River Trent and lying close to Derby, Nottingham and Burton upon Trent, with easy road links that make it part-rural, part-commuter belt.

Its history is shaped by mining and brick- and pottery-making around Swadlincote, while places such as Repton - an early medieval Mercian centre now known for its historic school - and the National Trust’s Calke Abbey give the district notable heritage. The landscape has been reshaped by the National Forest project, which has brought tree planting, outdoor recreation and leisure-led tourism, and the modern economy combines light manufacturing, logistics and local agriculture with a lively village and community life.
