East Budleigh is a small village in East Devon, in the county of Devon, England, tucked into the gentle slopes of the Otter Valley a short distance inland from the coast. The surrounding farmland and hedged lanes open out towards the nearby seaside of Budleigh Salterton and the Otter Estuary, with the pebble beaches and geology of the Jurassic Coast within easy reach, so it’s popular with walkers and people seeking a rural base for coastal exploration.
Historically it’s a traditional Devon village - thatched cottages, a medieval parish church and quiet lanes - and it’s best known as the parish of Hayes Barton, where the Elizabethan explorer Sir Walter Raleigh was born. The local economy has long had an agricultural base and today mixes farming, small-scale tourism and commuters; socially the village retains an active community around its church, village hall and pub, and is valued for its peaceful character and links to the county’s history.
