Ottery St. Mary is a small historic market town on the River Otter, about 10 miles east of Exeter in the district of East Devon, Devon, England. It lies in a shallow valley surrounded by rolling farmland and woods, making it a pleasant gateway to the nearby coast and countryside.
Famous as the birthplace of Samuel Taylor Coleridge and for its striking medieval parish church, the town retains a strong community feel with independent shops, regular markets and an agricultural hinterland. Culturally it is best known for the annual Bonfire Night "tar barrels" - a dramatic local tradition - and economically it combines local services, tourism and commuter links to larger towns.
