Buckfastleigh sits in the steep, wooded valley of the River Dart on the southern edge of Dartmoor, within the Teignbridge district of Devon, England. Its history is tied to riverside industry - former woollen and paper mills harnessed the Dart - and to Buckfast Abbey, the rebuilt medieval monastery whose Benedictine community has been an important cultural and economic presence since the 19th century.
Today the local economy leans on tourism and heritage: the volunteer-run South Devon Railway offers steam services to Totnes, while walkers, cyclists and birdwatchers use the town as a gateway to the moor. It remains a small, close-knit community with independent shops, pubs and regular local events that reflect both its industrial past and rural character.
