Appledore sits on the estuary of the River Torridge in the Torridge district of Devon, England, its narrow streets and rows of fishermen’s cottages leaning towards the water and the slipways below. Historically the village has been defined by shipbuilding and fishing - the boatyards and former shipyards remain a striking reminder of a maritime past - and it looks across the estuary towards Bideford and out to Bideford Bay, making it a popular spot for boats, birdwatching and estuary walks.
Today Appledore balances a lively summer tourist trade with a close-knit local community: you’ll find working boatyards, seafood pubs, small galleries and occasional maritime and community events that celebrate its seafaring roots. Economically it mixes traditional marine trades with hospitality and arts, while social life is often organised around volunteer groups, the lifeboat station and seasonal festivals that keep the village character very much alive.
