Northam sits on the north Devon coast in the district of Torridge, Devon, England, overlooking the mouth of the River Torridge. The ward includes the wide open common and dune system of Northam Burrows, a popular public space and golf course right beside long sandy beaches, and lies close to the Victorian resort of Westward Ho!. The setting gives easy access to coastal walking and cycling, including links with the Tarka Trail, and brings a distinctly maritime character to the area.
Historically the area grew from small-scale shipbuilding and seafaring communities and today combines agriculture, tourism and local services with many residents commuting to nearby Bideford and beyond. You’ll find a mix of historic buildings and modern housing, an active community life centred on local clubs and events, and a steady flow of visitors in summer drawn by the beaches, nature and coastal scenery.
