The civil parish of Chailey sits in the district of Lewes, East Sussex, made up of a cluster of villages and hamlets such as South Chailey and Chailey Green. It occupies low-lying Wealden countryside and open commons to the north of the South Downs, and is best known for Chailey Common - a mosaic of wet heath, pools and grazing that supports locally rare plants and invertebrates.
Historically the commons and agriculture shaped a pattern of smallholdings and village life, and the area gained wider recognition through the early 20th‑century Chailey Heritage Foundation. Today Chailey remains largely rural, with farming and small local enterprises alongside many residents who commute to nearby towns such as Lewes and Brighton; village halls, clubs and annual fêtes keep a strong community spirit while active conservation work protects the commons.
