The ward around Plumpton, Streat, East Chiltington and St. John lies in the Lewes district of East Sussex, straddling the northern scarp and downland of the South Downs National Park. It includes the agricultural college Plumpton College and the popular Plumpton Racecourse, and is characterised by chalk grassland, rolling hills and long-distance walking routes that attract day visitors.
Historically farmed with medieval parish churches and scattered farmsteads, the area still depends on agriculture and estate management while benefiting from the college, race-day tourism and commuters to Lewes and Brighton. Village life is centred on pubs, halls and active conservation groups, with a strong local focus on protecting the distinctive downland biodiversity and rural character.
