Firle is a small village and civil parish in the Lewes district of East Sussex, sitting on the chalk escarpment of the South Downs a few miles south‑east of Lewes and within easy reach of the coast. The settlement clusters around a lime‑tree‑lined green and narrow lanes, with flint cottages and a medieval parish church; the downs above, notably Firle Beacon, give wide panoramas and form part of the popular walking country of the national park.
The landscape is dominated historically by Firle Place, an Elizabethan manor long associated with the Gage family, which along with nearby cultural attractions such as Glyndebourne helps to sustain a modest tourist trade. Agriculture remains important, but the village also benefits from visitors to its historic houses and downland archaeology; socially it retains a close‑knit community feel with traditional fetes and local events.
