St John Without is a small, mainly rural civil parish immediately to the south of Lewes in East Sussex, England. It occupies the lower slopes and fields between the town and the South Downs, with chalk downland, farmland and a network of footpaths that drop down into the River Ouse valley.
Historically carved out of the larger ancient parish of St John in the late 19th century, the area now combines agricultural activity with a commuter and residential community who look to Lewes and nearby Brighton for services and work. Local life is quietly tied to the rhythms of the downs and to the cultural life of Lewes - from village churches and farmsteads to participation in the town’s long-standing traditions.
