Fairlight in Rother, East Sussex, England sits on a low ridge above the English Channel, roughly between Hastings and Rye. The settlement drops down to Fairlight Cove and its shingle beach; the coastline here is notable for dramatic cliffs, wide sea views and ongoing coastal erosion and occasional landslips that have helped shape the local landscape.
Historically the area has ties to fishing and the smuggling trade common on the south coast, but today Fairlight is largely residential with a mix of period cottages and newer homes, many occupied by commuters or holiday visitors. The village retains a strong community feel, small local amenities and good access to coastal walking routes, with residents generally active in conservation of the downland and shoreline habitats.
