Heybridge Basin is a small waterside village where the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation meets the tidal River Blackwater, a short mile or so from Maldon in Essex, England. The spot is dominated by a working lock and swing bridge, a small marina and boatyard, and the wide salt‑marshes and mudflats of the Blackwater Estuary, an internationally important area for wintering wildfowl and waders.
Originally created when the navigation opened around the turn of the 19th century to link the inland waterways with the estuary, today the basin’s economy and social life are largely leisure‑based: boating, fishing, birdwatching and casual waterside pubs and cafés. It has a relaxed, maritime atmosphere and is a popular stop for narrowboats, day visitors and walkers exploring the coastal path and estuary wildlife.
