Canewdon is a small village and civil parish in the district of Rochford, in the county of Essex, England. It sits on a low chalk hill looking out over the salt marshes and creeks of the River Crouch estuary, which gives unusually wide views for this part of Essex and makes the nearby mudflats and reedbeds important for birdlife.
The village has a strong sense of history and local character: the medieval St Nicholas Church crowns the hill and there are long-standing rural traditions, while 17th‑century witchcraft stories have given Canewdon a colourful folklore reputation. The local economy remains a mix of agriculture, small businesses and commuters heading to Southend-on-Sea or London, and the surrounding marshes attract walkers and wildlife enthusiasts.
