Canewdon is a small village and civil parish in the district of Rochford, Essex, England, sitting on higher ground above the salt marshes of the River Roach estuary. The village has a compact core of flint cottages and farmland with long views across the marshes towards the Thames and Wallasea Island, and its hill-top position gives a sense of being slightly apart from the busy coastal towns nearby.
Historically centred on the medieval St Nicholas Church, Canewdon carries a strong local identity with long-standing farming connections, a village pub and active community groups. It is perhaps best known in folklore for stories of witchcraft and hauntings that have attracted curiosity, while today many residents commute to Southend-on-Sea or London, and visitors come for birdwatching, walks on the marshes and a glimpse of Essex village life.
