West Clacton and Jaywick Sands sit on the North Sea coast of Tendring in Essex, a short stretch of seaside that blends the promenade and pier rounded character of Clacton-on-Sea with the low-lying, chalet-lined beaches of Jaywick. The shoreline, holiday parks and sea views give the area a strong seaside-resort feel, while the landscape is notably flat and susceptible to coastal weather and flooding.
Socially and economically the area contrasts with its tourist image: Jaywick in particular has been marked by high levels of deprivation, pressure on housing and employment and a history of flooding that has driven ongoing regeneration and resilience work. Local community groups, seasonal tourism and targeted investment shape much of the conversation about the neighbourhoods’ future as they balance seaside heritage with very real social and economic challenges.
