Jaywick is a low-lying coastal settlement in the Tendring district of Essex, England, sitting on the North Sea coast just a short distance from Clacton-on-Sea. It began in the 1930s as a cheap holiday development of small chalets and bungalows and retains a distinctive, tightly packed row of colourful properties often referred to locally as Jaywick Sands.
Today Jaywick is a permanent residential community known for strong local spirit but also acute social and economic challenges: low incomes, high unemployment and severe vulnerability to coastal flooding (notably during the 1953 North Sea flood). The area has been the focus of successive regeneration and flood‑management discussions, and remains notable for its unusually low property prices and contentious debates about managed retreat versus investment in defences.
