Blaydon is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Gateshead, in Tyne and Wear, sitting on the north bank of the River Tyne a few miles west of Newcastle. It grew up in the 19th century around coal mining, glass and engineering works and the railways, and those industrial roots still shape the town’s character even as it has become more suburban with local shops and housing.
The place is best known culturally for the ballad “Blaydon Races”, a Geordie anthem that gives the town a strong sense of local identity and is celebrated in community events; today Blaydon combines light industry, commuter links by road and rail into Newcastle and Gateshead, active sports clubs and a Tyne-side heritage that many residents take pride in.
