Ryton is a riverside village in the Metropolitan Borough of Gateshead, England, sitting on the north bank of the River Tyne about six miles west of Newcastle upon Tyne. Historically part of County Durham, it still retains a village feel with stone cottages, a modest high street of shops and pubs, and easy access to the wider Tyneside conurbation.
Locally notable is Ryton Willows, a riverside nature reserve with wetlands and woodland popular for birdwatching and riverside walks, which gives the place a more rural, recreational character. Today Ryton combines commuter living with a small-business and community-centred economy, and its history - from agriculture to the wider industrial story of Tyneside - can still be read in the landscape and built fabric.
