Chowdene is a residential ward in the Metropolitan Borough of Gateshead, in Tyne and Wear, sitting on higher ground to the south of the River Tyne. The area is largely made up of mid‑20th century housing alongside later private developments, with local schools, shops and community centres serving a mixed population; its elevated position gives pleasant views across to Newcastle and the river corridor.
Like much of Gateshead it bears the imprint of Tyneside’s industrial past but today is defined by neighbourhood life, active local groups and easy bus links into town. There are pockets of green space and sports facilities nearby, and the ward’s character is shaped by steady regeneration and a strong sense of local community.
