Windy Nook and Whitehills sit on the eastern side of Gateshead, occupying a slightly elevated position that gives pockets of good views over the River Tyne and surrounding urban landscape. The area is largely residential, a mix of terraces, post‑war council housing and newer developments, with local shops, green spaces and community centres serving a compact, village‑like population while being only a short commute from Newcastle and the Team Valley trading area.
Like much of Tyneside, the neighbourhood has roots in coal and heavy industry and has undergone steady post‑industrial change and regeneration. That history is still visible in the street pattern and local buildings, and the community today is notable for active residents’ groups, schools and voluntary organisations working to improve services and maintain local identity amid wider economic shifts.
