Winlaton and High Spen sit on the western edge of the borough of Gateshead in Tyne and Wear, where the rolling fringe of the Pennines meets the outer suburbs of Newcastle. The local landscape is a mix of compact residential streets and open countryside, with views over the Derwent Valley and easy access to walks and green space that reflect the area’s semi-rural character.
Historically the area has an industrial past - Winlaton grew up around ironworking and edge‑tool manufacturing in the 18th century, while High Spen developed as a coal‑mining village - and you can still spot remnants of that heritage among terraces, old works sites and community buildings. Today it is largely residential with local shops, village halls and active community life, and many residents commute into Gateshead and Newcastle while valuing the quieter, village feel.
