Alvington is a small village in the western part of the Forest of Dean district of Gloucestershire, England, lying close to the border with Wales and the tidal reaches of the River Severn. It occupies a quietly rural spot amid farmland and pockets of woodland, on roads that link it to nearby towns such as Lydney and Chepstow, and within reasonable commuting distance of Gloucester.
The settlement retains a distinctly rural character: a mix of traditional cottages and newer homes, local farms and small businesses. Like much of the wider Forest of Dean area it has historic connections to forestry and the region’s former ironworking and mining activities, while today community life is centred on village events, countryside walking and a generally strong local identity rather than any large industry.
