The civil parish sits in the southern part of the Forest of Dean district of Gloucestershire, straddling high ground above the River Wye and the wooded slopes of the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Hewelsfield is an upland village of farmland and hedgerows with broad views across to Wales, while Brockweir clusters down by the river with narrow lanes and traditional stone buildings beside the historic quay.
Historically Brockweir was a small river port and boat‑building centre, handling timber, lime and other goods on the Wye; the decline of river trade left a mix of converted riverside buildings and a sturdy local identity. Today the parish economy is largely agricultural with a strong tourism and outdoor‑activity element - walking, canoeing and birdwatching are popular - and the social mix ranges from long‑standing farming families to newcomers drawn by the scenery, with nearby towns such as Chepstow and Monmouth providing additional services.
