Clearwell is a small village tucked into the western fringe of the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire, England. It is best known for the Clearwell Caves, a network of old iron‑ore workings and show caverns that reveal mining activity here going back to Roman times; the surrounding landscape of mixed woodland and pasture gives the village a tucked‑away, rural feel on the edge of the Wye Valley area.
Alongside its industrial archaeology, Clearwell has a striking Gothic revival house, Clearwell Castle, and a long association with traditional Forest customs such as freemining. Today the local economy leans on tourism, small‑scale crafts and hospitality - walkers, cavers and history enthusiasts make up much of the visitor trade - while the community retains the character of a working rural village with a strong sense of local identity.
