Broadwell and Coalway are adjoining villages on the edge of the Forest of Dean in west Gloucestershire, England, close to the market town of Coleford. Their sheltered setting amid ancient woodland gives easy access to walking and cycling trails, and the landscape still shows traces of the area’s long ironworking and coal‑mining history together with the Forest’s unusual freemining and commoners’ traditions.
Today both places feel largely residential with a mix of small businesses, local services and tourism connected to the forest; community life is quietly active around village halls and clubs, and many people commute to Gloucester or across the border into Wales for work. They make a pleasant base for exploring the outdoors, local heritage and the distinctive social fabric of the Dean.
