Silchester

Silchester is a small village and civil parish in Basingstoke and Deane, Hampshire, England, best known for the remarkably well-preserved ruins of the Roman town Calleva Atrebatum. The rectangular street grid and defensive stone walls are visible in the countryside and have been the subject of major archaeological excavations; the Roman layers survive unusually well because a later medieval town did not overlie the site, making Silchester a key spot for understanding pre‑ and post‑Roman Britain.
