Mortimer is a compact village in West Berkshire, forming much of the parish of Stratfield Mortimer. It sits in attractive countryside between Reading and Newbury, with a small railway station on the Reading–Basingstoke line and plenty of woodlands and commons nearby, including the built-up area of Mortimer Common. The village’s setting gives easy access to country walking and the wider North Wessex Downs landscape while keeping commuter links to larger towns.
Much of Mortimer’s identity reflects its medieval origins - the name comes from the Mortimer family who once held the manor - alongside Victorian and later development around the railway. Today it’s a largely residential community with a village green, local shops and pubs, a primary school and active societies and events, popular with families and commuters seeking a rural feel within reach of urban centres like Reading and Basingstoke.
