The small area of Exbury and Lepe sits on the eastern edge of the New Forest in Hampshire, England, straddling the north bank of the Beaulieu River and the Solent shoreline. Exbury is best known for Exbury Gardens, the Rothschild-created display of rhododendrons and azaleas with its own narrow-gauge steam railway, while coastal Lepe offers a windswept shingle beach and the popular Lepe Country Park with wide views across to the Isle of Wight.
The character of the area mixes horticultural tourism, boating and quiet rural life: visitors come for garden seasons, birdwatching, coastal walks and river trips, and locals live in small hamlets and estate communities. There is also a strong historic feel - from the grand house at Exbury House to wartime remains along the shore - and conservation and visitor services now play a central role in the local economy and community life.
