The small rural parish of Grateley sits in the northern part of Test Valley, Hampshire, on the edge of Salisbury Plain and within easy reach of Andover and Salisbury. The landscape is a mix of arable fields, chalk downland and pockets of woodland, with a scattering of historic earthworks and barrows that hint at a prehistoric and military-influenced past.
Traditionally agricultural, Grateley now combines farming with a number of commuter households who travel by road and rail - the local station on the West of England main line links the parish to nearby towns. The village retains a compact historic core with a parish church and period cottages, and its proximity to military training areas on the Plain has shaped aspects of its recent history and local economy.
