Swanscombe is a riverside ward in the borough of Dartford, Kent, lying by the River Thames and close to major rail and road links into London. Historically the area was dominated by cement works and chalk quarrying, which shaped its industrial landscape; many of those brownfield sites have been swept up in recent regeneration, with new housing and business developments linked to the nearby Ebbsfleet International station.
Despite modern change, Swanscombe remains notable for its deep past - the Swanscombe Skull finds put the locality on the palaeolithic map - and for a mixed, commuter-friendly community that balances riverside green spaces with pockets of local shops and community groups. Ongoing redevelopment and proximity to big retail and transport hubs mean the ward sits between a legacy of heavy industry and a steadily evolving suburban future.
