Aylesham is a village and civil parish in the district of Dover in east Kent, England. It was laid out in the 1920s as a purpose-built coal-mining village and drew many families, particularly from Wales, so the housing, village centre and community institutions still reflect that planned, mining-era character.
Since the pits closed the local economy has diversified and the parish now functions largely as a commuter and service community with schools, sports clubs and active local associations, alongside ongoing regeneration and new housing. Its social life is shaped by a strong sense of mining heritage and community identity, with memorials and events that link the village to the wider rural landscape between Canterbury and Dover.
