Sandgate is a compact coastal village on the English Channel, sandwiched between Folkestone and Hythe in the district of Folkestone and Hythe, Kent, England. It has a long shingle beach, low cliffs and a small seafront promenade, with views across the Channel and easy access to nearby military and transport hubs such as Shorncliffe Camp and Folkestone.
Locally there’s a strong sense of history and community: the remains of the 16th‑century Sandgate Castle, one of Henry VIII’s coastal forts, sit close to the shore, and the village’s past as a fishing and smuggling place is still part of its character. Today Sandgate supports independent shops, galleries and cafés, relies on a mix of tourism and commuter trade, and attracts both long‑standing families and newcomers drawn to its seaside ambience.
