Tovil sits in the narrow valley of the River Loose just to the south‑east of the county town of Maidstone in Kent, England; the parish occupies part of the River Medway catchment and is a short walk from the town centre and main transport links.
Historically the settlement grew up around water‑powered paper mills and light industry that exploited the valley, and many former mill buildings survive - some repurposed for housing or small businesses - giving the area a mixed industrial and residential character. Today Tovil has a close‑knit local community with shops and community groups, while many residents commute into Maidstone or further afield, and the landscape still shows clear traces of its working‑river past.
