Birchington South sits on the southern side of the coastal village of Birchington-on-Sea in the district of Thanet, Kent. The ward includes parts of the seafront near Minnis Bay, with a promenade, dunes and a mixture of period houses, post-war terraces and holiday accommodation that give it a relaxed seaside character.
Locally the area is supported by independent shops, cafés and small businesses and benefits from rail links at Birchington-on-Sea railway station, making it popular with commuters to London as well as retirees and summer visitors. Historic buildings such as the old parish church and a strong community network of clubs and events help maintain a village atmosphere despite seasonal tourism and the pressures of coastal change.
