The ward occupies the upper reaches of the River Holme in Kirklees, West Yorkshire, covering a string of stone-built villages north of Holmfirth such as Honley and Brockholes. The landscape is typical Pennine foothills - steep valley sides, patches of moorland and good access to walking routes - while the Penistone Line and nearby roads link the area conveniently to Huddersfield and beyond.
Historically the valley was shaped by 18th–19th century textiles and small-scale mill industry; today it combines commuter households with a lively local economy of independent shops, community groups and village events. The wider Holme Valley has a strong rural-tourism feel and cultural recognition from being associated with the setting of the long-running TV series Last of the Summer Wine.
