Anderton is a compact, largely rural civil parish in the borough of Chorley, Lancashire, sitting on the fringe of the West Pennine Moors and close to the popular walking country around Rivington Pike and the Rivington reservoirs. The parish landscape of moorland, stone lanes and reservoir shoreline draws walkers and birdwatchers, and you can still see elements of early 20th-century estate landscaping from the Rivington area.
Historically a small farming community with the usual stone cottages and fields, Anderton today combines agriculture with a residential mix of commuters who travel into Chorley, Bolton and Manchester. Local life is quiet and community-focused, with outdoor recreation and conservation playing an important role in the parish’s character and economy.
