Nelson sits in the borough of Pendle in Lancashire, tucked at the eastern foot of Pendle Hill with the River Calder running through the town. It expanded rapidly in the 19th century as a centre for cotton spinning and weaving, and that industrial heritage is still visible in rows of mill buildings and the street pattern left by the textile era.
Today the town is culturally diverse with a strong community life, local sports clubs and active arts and voluntary groups; its location near Pendle Hill and the historic Pendle witch-trial landscape brings walkers and heritage visitors. Economically it has moved from large-scale textiles to a mix of light industry, retail and ongoing regeneration projects aiming to revitalise town-centre spaces and former mill sites.
