Lower Upnor is a small riverside village on the east bank of the River Medway in the Medway area of Kent, sitting just downstream of Chatham Dockyard and opposite the historic town of Rochester. Its compact cluster of cottages, boatyards and slipways hugs the riverbank, making it popular with sailors and walkers who use the waterside footpaths and moorings for leisure boating and birdwatching among the tidal mudflats.
The village is closely linked to its military and maritime past: nearby Upnor Castle, a 16th-century artillery fort, once helped guard the dockyard and played a role in the Dutch raid of 1667, and the area later supported small-scale shipbuilding and servicing for naval traffic. Today Lower Upnor retains a village feel with a tight-knit community, heritage conservation, riverside pubs and tourism forming an important part of the local economy and social life.
