Hoo St. Werburgh is the largest settlement on the Hoo Peninsula in Medway, England, sitting on a modest ridge above the North Kent Marshes with views out over the Thames Estuary and the River Medway. The surrounding landscape of salt marsh, grazing farmland and nearby reserves such as Northward Hill gives it a distinctly rural, coastal character despite good road links to the towns of the Medway towns and London.
The village has medieval roots and takes its name from the parish church dedicated to St Werburgh, with historic layers from agriculture and brickmaking to twentieth‑century wartime defences. Today it functions largely as a local service centre and commuter community, while industry and energy infrastructure on the adjacent Isle of Grain and along the estuary have long influenced the local economy; the marshes remain important for wildlife and birdwatching, which many residents value alongside village clubs, pubs and schools.
