St. Mary's Island is a low-lying, largely modern residential peninsula in the unitary authority of Medway, sitting beside the River Medway with pleasant waterfront views and a small marina. Much of the land was reclaimed and developed in the late twentieth century, so the area has a planned feel with a parade of shops, a community centre and waterside housing; it also benefits from easy access to the historic naval facilities around Chatham and the riverside town of Rochester.
Locally the island has a strong community vibe and is popular with families and commuters, many of whom travel into London or other parts of North Kent. The surrounding mudflats and marshes make it unexpectedly good for winter wading birds and estuarine wildlife, while social life tends to centre on the waterfront, marina activities and residents' groups rather than heavy industry or large employers.
