Chattenden is a small, semi-rural settlement on the western edge of the Hoo Peninsula in the unitary authority of Medway, sitting close to the River Medway and near Rochester, Chatham and Upnor. The area is characterised by chalk downland and mixed woodland such as Chattenden Woods and Lodge Hill, and has a strong military history - much of the land was used as ammunition depots and barracks in the 19th and 20th centuries and later became notable for its wildlife interest, including nightingales and other protected species.
Today Chattenden feels more like a village outpost with a village community, popular with walkers and birdwatchers and with residents who commute into the nearby Medway towns; agriculture and conservation are important local activities. Proposals for redevelopment of former military sites have generated local debate, reflecting a tension between protecting valuable habitats and meeting housing needs in the region.
