The village of Welney sits in the low-lying fenland of Norfolk within the district of King's Lynn and West Norfolk, close to the border with Cambridgeshire. It lies on the banks of the River Great Ouse beside the seasonal floodplain of the Ouse Washes, a landscape of wide skies, ditches and washland shaped by centuries of drainage and flood management.
Historically defined by land reclamation and agriculture, the local economy is largely rural but bolstered by nature tourism: the nearby RSPB Welney reserve is famous for wintering Bewick's and whooper swans and draws birdwatchers to an area where working farmland and wildlife conservation sit side by side. The result is a small, close-knit community with a distinctive fenland character and a quiet seasonal influx of visitors.
