Backworth & Holystone

The ward of Backworth and Holystone sits on the north‑west edge of North Tyneside, occupying a patchwork of old village streets, newer suburban estates and surrounding greenbelt. It lies between Newcastle and the more rural parts of Northumberland, so it has the feel of a commuter hinterland while still retaining village character and open spaces.

Historically the area grew up around agriculture and local mining, traces of which survive in local buildings and community memory, but recent decades have seen modest residential growth and small local businesses serving families and commuters. Good road links into the wider Tyne and Wear conurbation, active community groups, schools and traditional pubs all contribute to a largely settled, family‑oriented social life.
