Fairburn sits on the western edge of North Yorkshire, close to the boundary with West Yorkshire and within the district of Selby. The parish is largely rural, with farmland and small woodlands, and is best known for the nearby Fairburn Ings, a reclaimed wetland and important nature reserve and SSSI that attracts birdwatchers and walkers.
The village retains a traditional feel with a historic core, parish church, village hall and pub; its economy is a mix of agriculture, local services and commuters to nearby towns, while conservation and outdoor recreation linked to the reserve play an increasingly prominent cultural and economic role.
