Choppington is a large village and civil parish in Northumberland, England, sitting a few miles north of Morpeth and between the former pit towns of Ashington and Bedlington. Originally an agricultural settlement, it expanded in the 19th and 20th centuries as part of the Northumberland Coalfield, and that industrial heritage still shapes the housing and street pattern.
Since the closure of the pits the area has seen economic change and pockets of regeneration, with light industry, local shops and many residents commuting to Newcastle and other centres. Community life is active around sports clubs, parish groups and green spaces, and features such as miners’ cottages and memorials keep the village’s coal-mining history visible alongside newer housing and small commercial estates near the River Wansbeck.
