Gedling

Gedling is a borough and district immediately to the north‑east of Nottingham, covering a mix of suburban towns such as Arnold and Carlton alongside smaller villages and open countryside. The area rises onto sandstone ridges and includes Gedling Country Park, a reclaimed former colliery site whose raised spoil heap gives panoramic views across Nottingham and the Trent valley.

Historically the district expanded in the 19th and 20th centuries around industries like framework knitting and coal mining - the former Gedling Colliery still figures large in local memory - and many settlements retain Victorian terraces, village greens and historic parish churches. There are conservation areas and active community groups keeping local traditions alive, with markets and cultural events centred on town hubs such as Arnold.

Today Gedling combines commuter suburbs, pockets of light industry and stretches of countryside, so it feels part residential town, part green belt. Local shops, schools and leisure facilities serve a diverse population, while buses and road links make travel into Nottingham straightforward for work and study.
