The market town of Wallingford sits on the north bank of the River Thames in South Oxfordshire, Oxfordshire. Perched beside the remains of Wallingford Castle and stretches of medieval town wall, it grew as a river crossing and market centre and was transferred from Berkshire to Oxfordshire in 1974.
Today Wallingford combines a busy high street of independent shops, antiques and cafés with a strong community arts scene, an active museum and events such as the BunkFest folk festival. Tourism, local services and commuting to nearby Oxford and Didcot underpin the economy, while the preserved heritage line from Cholsey celebrates the town’s railway past and the suburb of Winterbrook is noted as the long‑time home of Agatha Christie.
