Caversham sits on the north bank of the River Thames opposite central Reading, linked to the town by bridges such as Caversham Bridge. It’s a largely residential, suburban ward with a mixture of Victorian and Edwardian streets, conservation areas and family-friendly parks, and many residents commute into Reading or further afield to London. The local high street and riverside paths give it a village-like feel despite being very close to the town centre.
Historically the area was part of Oxfordshire before joining Reading, and it retains touches of that parish heritage around places such as Caversham Park and the riverside Caversham Court Gardens. The Thames brings a strong watersports culture - rowing clubs and locks are prominent - and the neighbourhood hosts independent shops, pubs and community events that underline its distinct identity within the wider borough.
